Much research in the area of transitions to Post-Secondary Education (PSE) has shown that there are a number of non-financial barriers to PSE. Among some of the most significant are lack of information about PSE as well as lack of direction which includes the links between school and the world of work. Many students do not have a clear idea of their interests and passions and how these can be exercised in a job setting. As a result, they may disengage from school completely and if they do choose to go on to a PSE, they lack the direction that really engages them in the process. This can and does result in lower retention and higher drop-out rates at both the high school and post-secondary levels.
EXPLORE is designed to provide elementary, middle and high school students with the tools, resources and support to overcome common roadblocks, including lack of financial resources, lack of information, lack of support, lack of confidence and lack of direction.
Although teachers and guidance counsellors are able to provide much of this information already, the “near-to-peer” approach of the College Ambassadors has proven to be a credible messenger.
